Local government makes savings of 70% by using open source software
The Canary Islands Regional Government have implemented new computer systems, that will save 70% of license costs over three years, through the use of open source software and cloud virtualization.
This is the feedback from Roberto Moreno, the DG of Telecomms and IT, who presented the details before a Madrid audience of technicians on 24 January.
Moreover, Sr Moreno claimed that the migration is going ahead without any loss in functionality, and without users of the systems facing any significant problems.
The Canary islands administration servers support more than 40 different software technologies, among them being web applications, payroll applications, email, VOIP telephony and document management, and many others. The aim is not just to save money, but indeed to improve the efficiency and functionalities of the systems involved.
It is not known how many other Spanish administrations intend taking the open-source route, and indeed the administration of La Coruña have already ruled out replacing their IT systems with open-source solutions.
